Designer Asphalt Shingles
Designer shingles are heavy laminated asphalt shaped to look like slate or shake, and they buy the look of an expensive roof without the weight of one.
What It Is
Sometimes called luxury or premium shingles. Extra layers of mat and a varied tab pattern give a deep irregular shadow that reads as stone or wood from the street. Still asphalt, still nailed down the same way, still installed by a normal roofing crew.
Where It Wins
- Looks right on a Victorian or a Tudor where flat shingle looks wrong
- Heavier mat means better hail and wind performance
- No structural work needed, unlike real slate
Where It Does Not
- Roughly half again the cost of a standard architectural roof
- Heavier bundles mean a slower install and a higher labor line
- Close up nobody mistakes it for slate
In the Quad Cities
Worth it on the older houses in the McClellan Heights and Vander Veer neighborhoods, where the roof is a big part of what the house looks like. Wasted on a ranch.
