Architectural Asphalt Shingles
Architectural shingles are laminated in two layers so they look thicker from the street and hold up to hail better than the flat kind, and they are what most Quad Cities homes should get.
What It Is
This is the default, and for good reason. Two layers of mat bonded together gives a shingle real thickness, a shadow line that reads well from the ground, and enough body to take a hailstone without splitting the way a thin shingle does. In a market that gets serious hail, that matters more than the look.
Where It Wins
- The best value per year of life in this climate
- Impact resistant versions carry a real insurance discount
- Every roofer in the valley can install it correctly
- Wind ratings on current products handle straight line wind well
Where It Does Not
- Still an asphalt product, so heat shortens it
- Twenty five years, not the fifty a metal roof gives
- Color fades slowly over the life of the roof
In the Quad Cities
If you own a normal house in Davenport, Bettendorf, Moline or Rock Island and you are not planning to stay forty years, this is almost certainly the right roof. Spend the extra on the impact resistant grade rather than on a longer warranty.
