Roofing Materials
Stone Coated Steel
Stone coated steel is a steel panel with crushed stone bonded to the surface, so it has the texture of a tile roof and the weight of a metal one.

What It Is
Steel does the structural work, the stone granules do the appearance and take the impact. The result handles hail extremely well because the granule layer absorbs the hit before the steel sees it.
Where It Wins
- Among the best hail performance of anything available
- Quieter than bare metal in rain
- Very long warranties, often transferable
Where It Does Not
- Expensive, and installers are not everywhere
- The granule surface holds moss on a shaded north slope
In the Quad Cities
If hail is the thing that worries you and the budget is there, this and impact rated asphalt are the two to compare.
