Modified Bitumen
Modified bitumen is asphalt in rolls with rubber or plastic mixed in, laid in two or more layers, and it is the toughest flat roof to walk on.
What It Is
Think of it as a roll of very heavy duty shingle material. It goes down in layers, torched, hot mopped or self adhered, with a granulated cap sheet on top that does the same job granules do on a shingle.
Where It Wins
- Multiple layers mean a puncture rarely reaches the deck
- Handles foot traffic better than any single ply
- Self adhered versions need no open flame near an old house
Where It Does Not
- Shorter life than a good single ply membrane
- Torch applied work is a real fire risk on a wood framed building
- Dark surface absorbs heat
In the Quad Cities
Very common on the porch and addition roofs of older Davenport houses, and a good fit there. Ask for self adhered rather than torched on anything attached to a wooden house.
