Cedar Shingles
Cedar shingles are sawn flat on both faces, so they lie tighter and look far more even than a shake.
What It Is
The refined version of the same material. Machine sawn to a uniform taper, laid in neat courses. Where a shake is rustic, a shingle is tailored, and it suits a Queen Anne or a Shingle Style house exactly.
Where It Wins
- Crisper and more formal than shake
- Thinner and lighter, so easier on an old frame
- Can be cut into decorative patterns on gable ends
Where It Does Not
- Thinner means a shorter life than shake
- Same fire and maintenance questions as any wood roof
In the Quad Cities
Historically correct on a lot of the housing stock in the Village of East Davenport. Worth asking whether a synthetic version gets you close enough.
